¦ Plus, enthusiasm never stopped fueling interest in George Miller's wildly imaginative and action-packed "Mad Max: Fury Road" (Warner Bros.) since its mid-May 2015 release.Įight films were nominated. However, keep in mind "Spotlight" was distributed by Open Roads Films which, in regard to Oscar campaigns, lacks the deep pockets of Hollywood's major studios (Fox, Paramount, Warners). ¦ The Screen Actors Guild gave Best Film Ensemble - in effect, its Best Picture vote - to "Spotlight." This is my favorite 2015 film, so I was excited the actors' guild also includes the most academy voters. ¦ The Directors Guild of America honored Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for "The Revenant" (20th Century Fox). ¦ "The Big Short" (Paramount Pictures) pulled off an upset by winning the Producers Guild of America award. For the first time, special interest guilds failed to agree on even one Best Picture nominee.

The Best Film competition is as exciting as it is unpredictable. I enjoyed "Mad Max: Fury Road," more with a second viewing, but I doubt that its legacy as a Best Picture winner would last long. Social issue films "Spotlight" and "The Big Short" could cancel each other out. My gut, however, warns me of a strong possibility of a split. Those who have read my past Oscar stories know my heart tells me Best Picture and Best Director should be joined at the hip. My first prediction (not preference) for Best Picture was "The Revenant" that pick of course affected other choices. Easily three, perhaps four, of the eight nominated films remain in the running. Nevertheless, the Best Picture race generates loads of suspense. Will it matter that Stallone was ignored by the Screen Actors Guild, who gave his spot to Idris Elba for "Beasts of No Nation?" With Elba not nominated, Stallone seems a heavy favorite. RELATED: Kerns reveals his predictions, preferences for Academy Awards

Past surprises give me hope that another might arrive among voting for supporting actors, where it pains me to see Sylvester Stone ("Creed") favored. Acting categories provide few challenges for movie fans predicting Sunday's winners at the 88th Academy Awards.
